Why is (D) the answer?

The passage roughly says:

1) The average number of musicians per band has decreased (e.g. 10 to 5)

but that

2) The overall number of musicians has increased (e.g. 100 to 1000)

This fits nicely with (D) in that the TOTAL number of bands would have increased — from 10 bands to 200 bands if we use the figures above.
